I have a suggestion about the hole. Maybe the VW isn't just lit up by "shine", but by the aftereffects of a focused burst. If a jet was "fired" through it at one point, it would blast a hole and leave much residual energy, and subsequent undirected radiation from the quasar would keep it hot.

Happy birthday to all Zooites!

And don't worry about talking about Hanny's Voorwerp on my account. I love hearing more about it. From the amateur's perspective, it's actually more exciting than your professional work.

[But don't stop talking about that, either!]

Thanks for an interesting, informative & amusing ("Kevin-months", Lol! ;D) piece, & Happy Birthday Galaxy Zoo!
p.s. I think it's important to note that much of the success of GZ (IMHO) comes from the fact that the ZooKeepers have made genuine efforts to keep the Zooites informed & imbued with a real sense of inclusion... & I thank you for that - in fact a big thank you to everyone; 'keepers, admin, mods, volunteers, professional & amateurs alike who have made this thing work, & have engendered a spirit of community which extends beyond the Science...
Here's to you all!

I'm glad of the fame of the "Voorwerp". A significant individual discovery, and any of us might make the next one when Zoo 2 starts.

Thank you for your informative article. However, that thanks pales in comparison to the thanks for providing us an opportunity to participate in current scientific work expanding the human knowledge and understanding of the universe.
